HBO’s Perry Mason Taps Current Music for 21 Original Songs and Rerecords
1932 was a big year for Current Music and Perry Mason. We embarked on a monumental task of creating 21 original songs and period recordings for the MiniSeries starring Matthew Rhys as Perry Mason, John Lithgow Elias Birchard “E.B” Jonathan, who hires him to solve a crime and Tatiana Maslany as Sister Alice, an evangelical minister with a huge personality.
The songs are painstakingly authentic to the era 1932, involving 33 different period instruments and 7 arrangers and composers. Not to be pigeonholed to a single style, we created Big Band songs with vocals, soulful church groups, “Juke Joint” jazz and a protest march, among others.
Alongside Current Music’s CEO Maddie Madsen who produced, big shout outs go to Luke Carlson, Michael Seaman & members of The Fresh Rhythm Big Band, Rob Walker, Michaeloha Elam of Leche de Tigre and guest conductor of the Chamber Orchestra of Kona, Matthew Sikora and Elizabeth Forde and a huge debt of gratitude goes to multi-faceted film composer Aram Mandossian.
This prequel about famed defense lawyer Perry Mason, (based on characters from Erle Stanley Gardner’s novel) is set in LA right after the Great Depression. The miniseries is backed by Robert Downey Jr & Susan Downey’s production company with Tim Van Patten (Game Of Thrones, Sopranos, etc), directing 5 episodes including the pilot.
Premiering on Father’s Day & the summer solstice, what’s not to love about adding this to your celebration agenda!
